No-Nonsense NZ Packing List

New Zealand can give you beach weather and a cold downpour on the same day. You don’t need to pack your whole wardrobe. You just need the right layers, shoes you’ll actually wear, and a few road trip essentials.

Here’s what earns its place in the bag—and what can stay home.

🧥 Clothing: prepare for four seasons in one day

A waterproof, windproof jacket
This is the one item you’ll be glad you packed when the weather changes halfway through a walk. Choose one with a hood.

A warm layer or two
A merino top or fleece is easy to layer under your jacket. Add an extra warm layer if you’re travelling in winter or heading into alpine areas.

3–4 comfortable T-shirts
Lightweight tops that dry quickly are handy when you’re moving between walks, beaches and long drives.

Two pairs of comfortable pants
Pack one pair you can walk in and one casual pair for cafés, towns and travel days.

Shorts and swimwear
You’ll want them for warm beach days and Rotorua’s hot pools. We call swimwear togs here.

A sunhat, sunglasses and warm socks
The sun can be strong even when it feels cool. Pack several pairs of comfortable socks if you’re planning to walk often.

🥾 Shoes you’ll actually wear

Trail runners or hiking boots
Choose shoes that suit the walks you’re planning, and break them in before your trip. If you’re bringing used outdoor footwear into New Zealand, clean off soil and seeds before you travel and declare it on arrival.

Casual shoes
Something comfortable for exploring towns and stopping for lunch.

Jandals (flip-flops)
Handy for the beach, campground showers and giving your feet a break after a walk.

🎒 Road trip essentials

A small daypack
Big enough for your jacket, water, snacks and anything you need on a walk. A rain cover is a bonus.

A reusable water bottle and coffee cup
Refill at drinking-water taps along the way. Check local notices before drinking from an unfamiliar supply, and don’t assume water from streams is safe.

A camera or a phone with plenty of storage
NZ has a way of putting a breathtaking view around the next bend. You’ll want to capture a few of them.

A phone charger and power bank
Navigation, photos and filming can run your battery down faster than you expect.

A travel adapter
New Zealand uses Type I power plugs—the same shape used in Australia.

A quick-drying towel
Especially useful if you’re staying in a campervan or stopping for swims.

Your regular medication and a small first-aid kit
Keep medication in your day bag, along with basics such as plasters for blisters.

☀️ Sun and sandfly protection

Sunscreen
Bring SPF 50+ and reapply it as directed, especially after swimming or sweating. You can still get sunburnt on a cool or cloudy day.

Insect repellent
Sandflies can be a nuisance in some coastal and bush areas, particularly on the West Coast. A good repellent and clothing that covers your skin will make stops much more pleasant.

❌ What can stay home?

Lots of dressy outfits
Most road trip stops are relaxed. One outfit you feel good in is plenty for most trips.

A heavy umbrella
A hooded rain jacket is more useful when the wind picks up.

Shoes you might wear “just in case”
They take up space quickly. Pack for the activities you’ve actually planned.

Too many valuables
The best bits of an NZ road trip usually involve getting out of the car, wandering down a track and seeing where the day takes you. Keep your bag simple.

Gem Trails tip: Before you zip up your suitcase, check the forecast for every region on your route. A summer day in the Bay of Plenty can feel very different from an evening in the South Island.
